The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is one of the auxiliary branches of the Indian Armed Forces, tasked with the mission to guard the Republic of India’s maritime interests. The Indian Coast Guard is an armed force of the Union of India, under the Ministry of Defence. The Indian Coast Guard was formally established on 18th August 1978 as an independent entity as per the Coast Guard Act. The ICG mission is to protect India’s maritime interests, including its coastline, Exclusive Economic Zone and Shipping. The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) was established in November 1993 as an autonomous society under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India. NIOT is managed by a Governing Council and the Director is the head of the Institute. The institute is based in Chennai.
